Giro d'Italia, Stage 8: Tschopp Moves Up; Pinotti Loses Time

13. May 2012

BMC Racing Team's Johann Tschopp finished with the lead pack Sunday at the Giro d'Italia while teammate Marco Pinotti conceded 51 seconds to the main contenders in the uphill finish.

A Hot Day
Tschopp was 21st on the stage, 27 seconds behind Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago-CSF Inox), who soloed to the stage win. Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda) kept the race lead while Tschopp is now 21st, 1:28 behind. Pinotti, who had been 46 seconds out of the lead heading into the 229 km race, finished 1:24 behind Pozzovivo and slid from 11th to 23rd overall. Tschopp said he did his best to overcome a hot day that included a technical section of downhill before the final climb. "I repositioned myself at the front of the group among the best riders, and my sensations were pretty good, but Pozzovivo was clearly a level higher than anyone here today," Tschopp said.
