Giro di Sardegna, Stage 3: Ballan's Breakaway

24. February 2011

Lanusei, Italy

Alessandro Ballan sparked a six-man breakaway that survived for more than 150 kilometers and Mauro Santambrogio held onto his 10th place overall for the BMC Racing Team Thursday at the Giro di Sardegna.

Santambrogio Finishes 11th

"We talked about wanting to try something because there was an early climb," BMC Racing Team Assistant Sports Directeur Fabio Baldato said. "Brent (Bookwalter) tried first, then Ivan (Santaromita) and then Alessandro threw down a good attack." Ballan was the last of the escapees to be reeled in with 7 km left. Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) won the uphill sprint from a small group to regain the overall lead while Santambrogio finished 11th.
