BMC Racing Team Pleased To Be In Tour of California

7. April 2010

Santa Rosa, California

The BMC Racing Team will be one of 16 teams in the field of this year’s Amgen Tour of California when the most prestigious stage race in the United States begins next month.

An Important Race

President Jim Ochowicz said the BMC Racing Team – which is headquartered in one of the race’s finish cities (Santa Rosa) – is excited to have the race on its calendar that already includes the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. “Competing in America’s biggest and best bike race is important for the team,” Ochowicz said. “It allows us to compete with the best teams in the world on American soil.” The eight-day, 800-mile race runs May 16-23.

Good Preparation For Tour de France
BMC Racing Team Director Sportif John Lelangue said the race’s change in dates (from February to May) has done nothing to diminish the quality of the field. It also affords the event the opportunity to offer the first mountaintop finish in its five-year history. “The fact that the race is becoming more difficult makes it more interesting to us,” Lelangue said. “It’s maybe not a ProTour race this year, but it remains one of the only stage races on the UCI America calendar. It’s also a good last step in the preparation for some of the guys going to the Tour de France in July.”

Fielding A Strong Team
Lelangue said the BMC Racing Team will field a strong line-up that will include U.S. national road champion and past Tour of California stage winner/yellow jersey wearer George Hincapie, as well as Tour de France stage winners Marcus Burghardt and Karsten Kroon. The remainder of the team’s eight-rider roster will be announced later. The BMC Racing Team’s past success at the race includes Scott Nydam’s victory in the King of the Mountains classification in 2008.

Showcasing The BMC Brand
Mike Hürlimann, Chief Executive Officer of BMC, was pleased that the BMC Racing Team will be able to showcase the company’s bicycles in such a high-profile event.  “It is not only a great opportunity for our U.S. riders around George Hincapie to present themselves to the U.S. cycling fans, but also a fantastic showcase for us promote our brand and products on the highest possible level,” he said. “The U.S. market is a key growth market for BMC, where we have just recently established our own organization to serve our customers.”
