Roc d’Azur: MTB Marathon - Jane Nüssli 2nd , Alex Moos 8th

7. October 2011

Fréjus, France

Jane Nüssli (Team Fischer BMC) put up a close duel with Sally Bigham (Topeak Ergon) to finish second only 29 seconds behind her fellow Brtish rival. Alex Moos, in the meantime, battled with tired legs and bike handling challenges along the Roc83 course to finish respectable 8th in a world-class field. German marathon chamipon Moritz Milatz was forced to drop out of the race.

The 2011 Roc d'Azur has opened its gates for the 25th time. More than 150.000 Spectators are expected to come watch a diverse entertainment portfolio on two wheels from October 6th until 9th in the French coastal city of Fréjus. Whether trial shows, BMX, downhill, tandem, enduro or classical cross country races - Europe's largest MTB event has it all for the 17.000 young and not-so-young participants.

BMC has three Swiss-based teams lined up in various mtb disciplines: BMC Mountainbike Racing Team, Team Fischer-BMC, and Team Texner. Five riders opened up the racing weekend Friday morning at the Roc Marathon. Strong Mistral winds made 2.800 meters of climbing spread across 83 kilometers in length even harder.

"They changed the course a bit from last year and made it more difficult technically. The additional wind did not really make the day fun" wrapped up Alex Moos of BMC Mountainbike Racing Team his experience at the Roc83. He added: "The technical difficulty was to my disadvantage today." "I was not rested up well enough. I trained too hard this week. But I am content with my 8th place." Self-critically, Moos put his bottom race line on the table: "I was just not good enough today to keep up with the top guys".

Current world marathon champion Christoph Sauser (SUI/Specialized) won the race in 3:40:54 hrs ahead of current world U23 cross country champion Thomas Litscher (SUI/Felt Oetztal) in 3:44:07 hrs. and Karl Platt (GER/Team Bulls) in 3:45:15 hrs. A long season took ist toll on German marathon champion Moritz ilatz of BMC Mountianbike Raicng Team who was too exhausted to continue the race even though he was lying in fourth position after 66 kilometers. Yves Corminboeuf rode bravely to 20th. Gregory Buntschau of Team Texner ended up 19th.

Fellow BMC rider of Team Fischer-BMC - Jane Nüssli - had a better day out in Southern France's mediterranean backcountry. From the start, Nuessli kept close contact to race leader Sally Bigham (Topeak Ergon). She was able to close don on Bigham towards the end when a mere 29 seconds were still separating the two British riders after a day out racing for 4:43 hours. The two women finished in the top 60 of 1.300 participants.

Next race up for BMC riders at the 2011 Roc d'Azur: Women's Roc40 featuring Michelle Hediger of Team Fischer-BMC Saturday 9am. Sunday, it is cross country time for the elite men.
