Vuelta, Stage 12: Van Avermaet Seventh

1. September 2011

Pontevedra, Spain

Greg Van Avermaet registered the BMC Racing Team's third straight top 10 finish at the Vuelta a España, sprinting to seventh place in Thursday's stage that ended with a long, uphill drag into a headwind.

'Finally Had The Legs'

Van Avermaet said he was appreciative of the support he received throughout the 167.3 kilometer race. "All day, the guys supported me well, especially Taylor (Phinney) and Manuel (Quinziato) in the closing kilometers," Van Avermaet said. "It was a really good finish for me and I finally had the legs. The first week, I was suffering a bit in the heat. But the last two days, I feel I am getting on my normal form again. I'm really happy with this result. Now I have a good motivation for the other days." Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) won the stage and Bradley Wiggins (Sky Pro Cycling) kept the overall lead. Van Avermaet's seventh place follows a fourth by Mathias Frank in Wednesday's mountainous stage and Phinney's fifth place in Monday's time trial.
