Vuelta a España, Stage 8: Moinard in the Break; Morabito Still Top 20

25. August 2012

BMC Racing Team's Steve Morabito fought his way up the final climb Saturday to remain in the top 20 in the overall standings while teammate Amaël Moinard made the breakaway on a fast stage at the Vuelta a España.

Making The Break
Morabito lost contact with the leading group about four kilometers from the summit at the end of the 174.7 kilometer race, just as it was closing in on the remnants of a six-man breakaway that included teammate Amaël Moinard. With an advantage that once topped nine minutes, Moinard said he gave it his all after working hard just to make the escape on a day everyone wanted to be in the breakaway. The peloton averaged 53 kph in the first hour of racing. "Alessandro (Ballan), Mauro (Santambrogio) and Brent (Bookwalter) tried before I made it," Moinard said. "But with six guys against the whole Team Sky, you've seen from the beginning of the season it's not so easy. But it's good to try. I tried and did my best." Previous race leader Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team) won his second stage, passing Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff) in the final few meters. Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha Team), who finished second, kept the overall lead. Morabito finished 19th on the stage, 94 seconds back, and slipped one spot to 18th overall, 4:09 back of Rodriguez.
