Vuelta a España, Stage 3: Frank Feeling Better

22. August 2011

Totana, Spain

Mathias Frank of the BMC Racing Team overcame another hot day at the Vuelta a España to finish with a reduced peloton that could not catch a breakaway of four on Monday's 163 kilometer stage.

Suffering In The Heat

Frank said recent training at high altitude left him prepared for climbing, but not for high temperatures that have marked the race's first three days. "It was around 7 or 8 Celsius when we started training in the mornings and here we have 37 or 38 degrees so it's a big difference," Frank said. "Yesterday I was really suffering and couldn't really handle the heat. Today I was feeling better. I still had my problems on the last climb but I managed to follow. If I can continue to keep progressing each day, I'll be OK." Pablo Lastras (Movistar) soloed away from his breakaway companions to take the stage win and the overall lead. Frank's group of 42 arrived 1:43 later.
