Vuelta a España, Stage 2: Bunch Sprint

21. August 2011

Playas de Orihuela, Spain

Sunday's warm and wind-swept stage of the Vuelta a España ended with a bunch sprint and BMC Racing Team's Greg Van Avermaet finishing a team-best 14th place.

A Nervous Finish
BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said things became hectic in the last 25 kilometers of the 174 km stage after a four-man break was brought back. "It was really nervous," Verbrugghe said. "There were crosswinds near the sea border and although we were on big roads, it was dangerous." Van Avermaet said he was disappointed he couldn't take advantage of the slightly uphill finish, which normally plays to his strengths. "It was a bit of a pity because I liked the finish, but I just wasn't in a good position," he said. Chris Sutton (Sky Pro Cycling) got the win while Daniele Bennati (Leopard Trek) took over the race lead from teammate Jakob Fuglsang.
