Volta ao Algarve, Stage 2: Sprint Train Derailed

16. February 2012

Lagoa, Portugal

The BMC Racing Team's plan to contest Thursday's sprint at the Volta ao Algarve went awry when the road narrowed with two kilometers to go and Greg Van Avermaet nearly hit the pavement.

Finishing Climb On Friday

"With 10 kilometers to go, we were all in one line, staying in the front," Van Avermaet said, describing the BMC Racing Team's leadout train. "But then, when the road went to the right, that's where there were problems. I almost crashed. After that, we were were too far back to get back to the front. The race was over." Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky Pro Cycling) took the win and moved into the overall lead. Second on Stage 1, Van Avermaet is now fourth overall, four seconds behind. Friday's 194.6 km stage finishes on a Category 3 climb. "Tejay van Garderen and Steve Cummings are the two riders who must be able to do something good on the last climb," Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said. "So the team will ride for those two guys. They also made the lead out for Greg the last two days, so now it's on the opposite side and time for them to show their condition and what more we need to do before Paris-Nice."
