Volta a Catalunya, Stage 7: Tough Finish

24. March 2013

Steve Morabito (21st), Danilo Wyss (24th), Marcus Burghardt (32nd) and Ivan Santaromita (56th) finished in the peloton on a challenging final stage of the Volta a Catalunya Sunday, as Morabito's 12th place overall led the BMC Racing Team.

Morabito Satisfied With His Form
Thomas De Gendt (Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team) won the stage from a four-up sprint, 21 seconds before the peloton crossed the line. Morabito, who wound up 2:09 behind race winner Daniel Martin (Garmin-Sharp), said it was nice to have teammate Larry Warbasse in an early breakaway. "And in the final laps I had Danilo and Marcus around me too," he said. "I was expecting a bigger selection in the final laps – with less riders – but everybody was at the limit and each time it was splitting on the top of the climb I was with the best guys." Morabito said he was happy with his overall result. "I came here without stress, I trained hard at home and I spent two weeks at altitude so I am looking forward to my next races," he said. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said he saw a lot of fortitude on the final stage, which included eight laps of a circuit with a categorized climb. "It was good to have Larry Warbasse in the first breakaway on what was a hard circuit," he said. "I told the guys to keep an eye on Danilo Wyss and maybe see if we could move Steve Morabito up on the GC."
