Volta a Catalunya, Stage 2: Wyss Top 10 Again

19. March 2013

Danilo Wyss of the BMC Racing Team finished ninth in Tuesday's bunch sprint at the Volta a Catalunya and moved into third overall after teammate Marcus Burghardt made a late bid to take a small group to the finish.

Not A Smooth Sprint
Gianni Meersman (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) took his second straight stage win in the 160.7 km race that finished with four laps of a 9 km circuit. Wyss, who is 20 seconds off the lead of Meersman in the overall standings, said he had to hit the brakes during his sprint. "I got boxed in on the right side," he said. "I think we had good teamwork today and the circuit at the end was really technical." Burghardt, who was racing for only the third time this season after being sidelined by illness, said the tricky circuit played to his advantage. "I saw the other teams were working hard to keep their riders in position," he said. "I thought maybe it would be a good chance to go. But then the other guys didn't ride directly." BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said Wednesday's mountain-top finish will suit Steve Morabito and Ivan Santaromita. "I'd also put Yannick Eijssen up there," Sciandri said. "I'd like to see him do something. It's a hard little finish so it would be nice to see him moving around on the climbs on the front."
