Training Camp Diary: Some New Faces

Santa Cruz

Fresh off their impressive season-opening performance at the Santos Tour Down Under, world champion Cadel Evans and U.S. national road champion George Hincapie arrived at the BMC Racing Team training camp Monday afternoon.

Back From Down Under

Evans, Hincapie and a host of staff – including Director Sportif John Lelangue – converged on the team’s hotel in Agoura Hills, California, to meet many of their teammates for the first time. Smiles, handshakes and friendly conversation to catch up was followed by a team meeting and sponsor presentation by Steve Blick of Oakley. Not everyone who was in Australia will be at the remainder of camp, which runs through Sunday. Thomas Frei, Martin Kohler, Karsten Kroon, Mauro Santambrogio and Danilo Wyss headed directly to Europe to continue their individual preparations for the early-season races.

Stocking Up
While the BMC Racing Team was ratcheting up its training regimen along California coastline with a three-hour ride Monday afternoon, staff members were working behind-the-scenes to keep everything running smoothly. Executing the team’s third transfer in as many days (this one from Morro Bay to Agoura Hills) meant packing the spare BMC pro machine SLC01s and racemaster SLX01s, plus all their accompanying Easton wheels and equipment, along with a slew of nutritional products from First Endurance. A stop at a nearby grocery store also replenished the water (22 gallons) and supplies (139 other items) used to fuel the riders when they aren’t riding.
