Two steep climbs in the final 10 kilometers of the 168 km race proved to be the difference, BMC Racing Team Assistant Director René Savary said. "Martin made the race tough at the beginning and also Jeff later on," Savary said. "But at the end, we couldn't go with the top group. We are looking forward to tomorrow, when there aren't so many climbs." Laurent Mangel (Saur Sojasun) won a sprint from a small group that escaped in the final 20 km and assumed the overall lead.
