Tour de Suisse, Stage 7: Burghardt Wins Again

18. June 2010

Wetzikon, Switzerland

Marcus Burghardt showed his strength again Friday with a spectacular solo effort that earned him a second stage win in three days for the BMC Racing Team and the points jersey at the Tour de Suisse.

Soloed Final 50 Kilometers

Burghardt and teammate Mathias Frank were part of a 16-man breakaway before the German attacked on his BMC Team Machine SLR01 on his way to winning by a 1:01 margin. "To race more than 50 kilometers alone is not easy," Burghardt said. "But I was so motivated. I thought if I couldn't make it, for sure Mathias could make it." Before winning Stage 5 Wednesday, Burghardt had gone 692 days between victories. "It was nice not only for me but for our team," he said. "All the guys were helping me in the beginning and then Mathias was helping me in the break."

Frank Leads Two Competitions
By earning points on the two categorized climbs, Frank won back the King of the Mountain jersey he first earned on Stage 2. He also took the lead in the intermediate sprints competition. "It was really hard at the beginning, with lots of attacks in the first 50 km," Frank said. "Our breakaway formed just after it started raining. I tried to go for the mountain classification because I knew I could get the jersey." Steve Morabito remains in third place overall for the BMC Racing Team, 36 seconds off the lead with two stages left.
