Tour de Suisse, Stage 3: Burghardt 10th; Frank Still Best Swiss Rider

11. June 2012

Marcus Burghardt scored his best result for the BMC Racing Team in 16 months with a 10th place finish Monday while teammate Mathias Frank kept the "Best Swiss Rider" jersey.

Closed Railway Crossing Grows Gap
Burghardt said he was surprised stage winner Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) took so many risks on the tricky run-in to the finish that included several tight turns on roads still wet from rain. "My plan was to stay in front and then I was in second position with 400 meters to go," Bughardt said. "On the last corner, I thought I was already going fast, but Sagan passed me going five or 10 kph more, so I was really surprised. He took a big risk. Maybe too much because he had to take his foot out to stay on the bike." Sagan's win was his second in the first three stages while Rui Costa (Movistar Team) kept the overall lead. Burghardt's result was his best since finishing ninth overall at the 2011 Tour of Qatar. The other excitement during the 194.7 kilometer race came with 58 km to go when a closed railway crossing split the peloton, which had been chasing a breakaway group of three riders. "With 50 km to go, the lead was still nearly eight minutes, so that was really close," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said. "They only closed the gap in the final kilometer." In the Best Swiss Rider competition, Frank owns an eight second lead over Rubens Bertogliati (Team Type 1-Sanofi).
