Tour de Pologne, Stage 1: Battle To The Top

27. July 2013

A tough finishing climb to the ski station at Madonna di Campiglio in northeast Italy on a warm day marked the opening stage of the Tour de Pologne Saturday.

Pinotti In The Breakaway
BMC Racing Team's Dominik Nerz (19th) and Italian road champion Ivan Santaromita (21st) were the BMC Racing Team's first two riders to finish the 184.5-kilometer race that was won by Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida) in a sprint featuring 15 riders. Nerz and Santaromita arrived 67 seconds later. "Santaromita and Nerz were good, not far away from the leaders," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said. "I'm satisfied with how we rode as a team. I asked the guys to cover the early breakaways and they did." BMC Racing Team's Marco Pinotti was part of a four-man escape that enjoyed a nine-minute lead at one point. Baldato said Sunday's 206.5-km stage, which will also take place in the Dolomite mountains, poses an even bigger challenge. "It's already a hard stage and there's also the Passo di Pampeago, which is one of the steeper climbs that was done for many years at the Giro d'Italia," Baldato said. "The (finishing climb) Passo di Pordoi is not really as hard, but you arrive at 2,000 meters and it's supposed to be hot again tomorrow."
