Tour de l'Ain, Stage 1: Missed Opportunity

11. August 2010

Saint-Vulbas, France

What looked to be a possible stage win for Martin Kohler nearly ended in a crash Wednesday when the BMC Racing Team rider became tangled up in the chaotic dash to the finish at the Tour de l'Ain.

Kroon Finishes Ninth
Kohler and teammates Steve Morabito and Karsten Kroon made the front group over the decisive climb – despite Kohler having to stop to remove a stone that lodged between his frame and tire. "For the sprint, I was well-placed in about fourth position, just behind Karsten, with 600 meters to go, but then I got pushed away," Kohler said. "I almost crashed and lost position." Kohler stayed upright to finish 11th while Kroon was ninth. Stéphane Poulhiès (Saur-Sojasun) won the race and Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil) took the overall lead.
