National Road Championships: Ballan and Zahner among the winners

27. June 2010

Simon Zahner (SUI) and Alessandro Ballan (ITA) won silver and bronze at the National Road Championships for the BMC Racing Team.

Simon Zahner was delighted with silver in the Road Championships in Kriegstetten after coming sixth in the Swiss Time Trial Championships on Wednesday. About 30 km before the finish he broke away on his own, but Martin Elmiger (AG2r - La Mondiale) and Pirmin Lang (Bürgis Cycling Team) made up the ground again. Twelve kilometers before the finish Elmiger launched a successful attack, while Simon Zahner won the struggle for second place and picked up silver. “After I had ridden a lap alone at the front and got cramps, it was all just about damage limitation. I’m delighted with the medal,” the Swiss rider added.

“The course was very tough for me and the competition strong. I’m really happy about third place - it proves I'm in good shape. The result is very important for me with the Tour de France in mind, because I want to support Cadel Evans there,” was the comment of former world champion Alessandro Ballan after the race, which was won by Giovanni Visconti (ISD Neri Giambenini).
