Lichtervelde, Belgium

After figuring in the breakaway for most of Omloop van het Houtland, John Murphy sprinted to sixth place Wednesday, matching his best finish of the season for the BMC Racing Team.

Two In The Break

Murphy was joined by teammate Alessandro Ballan in a 24-man move that went away early in the 193.6-kilometer race and gained nearly six minutes. "There was a lot of wind today, and we knew it was going to explode right away and it did," Murphy said. "I started at the front and just did everything I could to stay in the first echelon." Murphy made a decisive group of nine when he followed an attack with 30 km to go. "I tried my own move with 2 km to go," the 2009 U.S. national criterium champion said. "We came back together in the last kilometer and I did what I could in the sprint." Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (Quick Step) took the win.
