Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne: Bad Luck

27. February 2011

Kuurne, Belgium

Greg Van Avermaet, the BMC Racing Team's designated leader for Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, had to chase back from two crashes Sunday, sapping his strength for the bunch sprint finish.

Van Avermaet crashed on the approach to the Kwaremont, then again on the finishing circuit in Kuurne. "With those two crashes and the big chase he made, he didn't have the legs," BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said. "Basically, it was bad luck today." Simon Zahner also crashed but was not seriously hurt, Lelangue said. Christopher Sutton (Sky) took the win.

Brent Bookwalter and Chad Beyer were part of a group of 22 riders that escaped the peloton in the first 15 km, then splintered near the finish. "I had good legs but I wasn't smart at the end," Beyer said. "I tried to follow Daniel Oss when he bridged to the front group, but he just had more power." Ivan Santaromita crashed and needed stitches on his chin, but was not seriously hurt. Pavel Brutt (Katusha Team) took the win.
