Giro d'Italia, Stage 3: Somber Mood

9. May 2011

Rapallo, Italy

A dark shadow was cast over the Giro d'Italia Monday following the death of Wouter Weylandt from injuries suffered in a crash. The BMC Racing Team expresses its sincere condolences to his family and the LEOPARD TREK team.

Dangerous Sport

BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said the crash was a reminder of the dangers of the sport. "We spoke this morning about how technical the course was today," he said. "Where he (Weylandt) crashed was a dangerous downhill, but he crashed in the straight part. I don't know exactly what happened." Angel Vicioso (Androni Giocattoli) won the stage and David Millar (Team Garmin-Cervelo) took the overall lead.
