Giro d'Italia, Stage 17: Frank In The Break

25. May 2011

Tirano, Italy

Mathias Frank finished 11th for the BMC Racing Team on Wednesday's stage of the Giro d'Italia after attacking on the final climb of the 230-kilometer race before losing contact on the descent to the finish.

Good Performance
Frank was part of an original 16-man breakaway that went away after 50 km. It was his attack on the Category 3 climb of the Aprica that split the bunch. "It was a very technical descent and Mathias didn't want to take too many big risks," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said. "I know he's disappointed, but he did a great job getting in the break and then attacking on the last climb. It was a really good performance for him." Frank said his crash on the first day of the Tour de France still haunts him. "I have a bit of a mental problem on the downhills," he said. "But I have to see the positive side. A couple days ago I was sick and my Giro was almost over. But I made it through that day and am feeling good again." Eigo Ulissi (Lampre-ISD) was awarded the victory following the relegation of Giovanni Visconti for irregularities in the sprint. Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard) retained the lead.
