Gilbert Finishes 15th At Flèche Wallonne

17. April 2013

Philippe Gilbert finished 15th Wednesday at Flèche Wallonne after the BMC Racing Team controlled the last two hours of the race to bring the peloton together to the foot of the finishing climb, the Mur de Huy.

Strong Team Effort
Gilbert drove the pursuit of Carlos Betancur (AG2R La Mondiale), who had attacked on the middle part of the 1,300-meter climb that averages 9.3 percent. But when race winner Daniel Moreno (Katusha Team) attacked with 400 meters to go, the world road champion was unable to respond. Sergio Henao (Sky Procycling) finished second and Betancur was third. "It was a fast race and the team controlled it well and rode very strongly today," Gilbert said. "It is always sad not to win, but I tried. A perfect race should be when I win. I am still missing a few percentages to win. When you are a favorite, you win when you are on your best level. I am gaining every day in my condition and we will see what Liege brings." BMC Racing Team President/General Manager Jim Ochowicz said while the team did not get the result it was looking for, the display of teamwork was impressive. "From the beginning to the end, we were in control," he said. "It was nice to see all the riders from the team participate. It was probably the first time all year we've really had a concentrated effort from everybody. It was fun to watch."
