Swiss Championships. Silver for Lukas Flückiger, Double U23 victory for Team BMC

7. July 2013

BMC Mountainbike Racing Team

Lukas Flückiger took the silver medal at Swiss National Championships, while Ralph Näf as fourth was close to Bronze. Reto Indergand was crowned as U23 champion.

BMC’s elite teamriders challenged defending champion Nino Schurter on the dry, demanding 4.3-kilometre course (elevation gain 233 metres) in Lenzerheide with its rich variety of challenges. In the summer heat it was Ralph Näf who first put himself in the limelight by taking the lead, whereas Lukas Flückiger first had to overcome his somewhat slower initial phase and, half a minute back, had to catch up to the leaders. He managed to close this gap at mid-race, but it took a lot of power out of him. „Then again and again Nino attacked so hard in the first climb that he got a gap of five or six hundred metres just within 15 seconds. To close up to him again repeatedly, weakened my morale and sapped my energy", said Flückiger.

When Schurter attacked again in the final lap, Flückiger had no suitable answer left and finished second. „But I have to be happy with that. I's not a disgrace to lose against Nino", said Flückiger.

With one and a half laps to go, Näf was still holding on to third position, but then he had to let pass Fabian Giger who was faster in the two tough climbs of the course. „Due to the surgeries that I had to undergo in spring, there are only very few races in my legs – and that’s a deficit. But now my time will come, now there will be compensation. From now on I will be the one who overtakes.“ Näf finished the race in superb fourth position.

Gold and Silver in the U23

Just like in 2012, there again was a double victory for the two favorites from the BMC Mountainbike Racing Team in the U23 category, Reto Indergand und Matthias Stirnemann – but this year they succeeded in reverse order. Reto Indergand rode a lonely race in the front position from start to finish. Defending champion Matthias Stirnemann, however, had some trouble following his teammate’s fast pace. „I am very happy because I was not in good shape after the European Championships. Now I have more self-confidence again. I knew that Reto is very strong, I considered him to be the favorite." On the last lap, Stirnemann even managed to get as close as ten seconds to Indergand. But Indergand did not let slip the victory from his hands. "It was a start-finish victory, but I never had a big lead, I always had to stay tuned. It's super cool, because this is my first Swiss title. I was second so many times. And now did it!," rejoiced Indergand.
