Vuelta a España, Stage 6: Santambrogio Eighth

23. August 2012

Mauro Santambrogio got the green light to contest Thursday's stage of the Vuelta a España and the result was an eighth-place finish for his fourth top 10 result of the year.

Santambrogio Gaining Power
Santambrogio was one of six riders from the BMC Racing Team in a group of 25 that reached the base of the three-kilometer climb at the end of the 175.4 km race. "Steve was a little bit behind, but (BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif) John Lelangue said for me to try for the stage," Santambrogio said. Race leader Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha Team) soloed to the stage win as Santambrogio arrived 28 seconds later. Since finishing sixth at Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian earlier this month, Santambrogio said he has started feeling better, despite conceding a total of 12 minutes on back-to-back mountain-top finishes earlier this week. "For me, this Vuelta is not about general classification ambitions, only to help Steve. I hope I can help him and maybe also get a result for the team." Morabito finished 20th, 51 seconds back, and slid one place on the overall standings to 14th. "Philippe Gilbert, Alessandro Ballan, Brent Bookwalter and Amaël Moinard did a good job of getting me positioned as we went right-left-right on the small streets before the climb," Morabito said. "I'm happy that I am still in contention for the general classification."
