Vuelta a España, Stage 6: Gilbert Ninth

29. August 2013

World road champion Philippe Gilbert finished ninth for the BMC Racing Team in Thursday's bunch sprint that ruined a 175-kilometer solo bid by Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step).

Santaromita, Eijssen Stay In Top 20
Martin attacked from the gun, built a lead of more than seven minutes while averaging 44 kph, and was only caught in the final 30 meters. "He was really strong," Gilbert said of the reigning world time trial champion. "We had to go really hard in the final, and, with all the roundabouts and corners, it was a little bit technical and dangerous. At the end, I found my position, but it was a little bit late. I kept my place from the last corner – with 500 meters to go – and I didn't move, so I finished ninth." Michael Morkov (Team Saxo-Tinkoff) took the stage win while Gilbert earned his 16th top 10 finish of the season. In the overall standings, BMC Racing Team's Ivan Santaromita remained 12th, 46 seconds behind race leader Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team), while teammate Yannick Eijssen is also in the top 20 (18th, at 59 seconds). "(It was a) great job all together for the final with Marco (Pinotti) and Philippe," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Yvon Ledanois said. "Philippe is getting better and better and tomorrow, a little more, I hope."
