Vuelta a España, Stage 4: Wyss In The Breakaway

27. August 2013

Danilo Wyss of the BMC Racing Team spent more than 150 kilometers in a breakaway with four others Tuesday at the Vuelta a España before being caught with 20 km to go.

Santaromita Up To 11th Overall
Wyss and the four others – Nicolas Edet (Cofidis-Solutions Crédits), Alex Rasmussen (Garmin-Sharp), Dennis Vanendert (Lotto Belisol) and Jussi Veikkanen (FDJ) - went away in the first 10 kilometers and built a lead of more than seven minutes after 80 km. "It was good to try with this hard climb and a finish that was not so easy," Wyss said. "We didn't know who was going to pull behind and it was a good day at the front. We had a lot of headwind, so it was not easy with just five guys. If we had a few minutes more, I think it would have been better for me. For sure we would have made it much farther." BMC Racing Team's Ivan Santaromita finished 18th on the uphill finish – in the same time as stage winner Daniel Moreno (Katusha Team) – and moved up from 13th place to 11th, 46 seconds off the lead. Teammate Yannick Eijssen (17th) is also in the top 20, 59 seconds behind new race leader, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team). Nibali displaced Chris Horner (RadioShack Leopard), who finished in a group six seconds behind.
