Vuelta a España, Stage 13: Santaromita Fourth

6. September 2013

Italian national road champion Ivan Santaromita of the BMC Racing Team finished fourth Friday at the Vuelta a España as the remnants of an 18-man breakaway survived to the finish.

Nerz Fights Back
Santaromita said he missed his opportunity to go for the win when Warren Barguil (Team Argos-Shimano) attacked inside the final kilometer of the 169-km race that finished going uphill and held on to win by seven seconds. "There was a moment when some riders were looking at each other and he went," Santaromita said. "I will try again because I want to win a stage at this Vuelta with this Italian champion jersey." Dominik Nerz, the BMC Racing Team's best-placed rider in 17th overall, had to fight back after a crash only 12 km into the stage. "I was suffering so much on the climb, but came back with the second group," Nerz said. "I'm really happy that I finished in the first group without losing time. I hope for a better day tomorrow." Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team) kept the overall lead as the top of the standings remained unchanged.

Lander Withdraws
The BMC Racing Team lost its second rider in as many days when Sebastian Lander did not start. The past Danish road champion was suffering from a respiratory tract infection, BMC Racing Team Doctor Roger Palfreeman said. "Being a young rider, we felt it was better to pull him out now before he was completely worn down," Palfreeman said. Lander said he enjoyed what he could of his first Vuelta start. "I was so happy before this race and felt my condition and my weight was very good," he said. "I think I did a good job for the team and supported them for almost the first two weeks. So I'm a little upset I couldn't complete it. But there's nothing I can do about it."
