Vuelta a España, Stage 11: Gilbert Top 15 In Time Trial

29. August 2012

Philippe Gilbert finished 14th and was the BMC Racing Team's best rider in Wednesday's individual time trial while teammate Steve Morabito held onto his spot in the top 20 overall after Stage 11 of the Vuelta a España.

Relaxed Approach
Gilbert, the former Belgian national time trial champion, had the seventh-fastest time when he finished and wound up 1:57 behind stage winner Fredrik Kessiakoff (Astana Pro Team). Gilbert said he took a relaxed approach to the 39.4-kilometer race against the clock – not even performing pre-race reconnaissance – while using the rider who started one-minute ahead of him, Lotto Belisol Team's Jurgen Van Den Broeck, to pace him up the climb that came at mid-race. "I started like normal and then I saw Van Den Broeck, so it gave me motivation," Gilbert said. "It also gave me a point to concentrate on for the climb. In the descent, I took it fast and clean. At the bottom, it was still a few kilometers to go and flat, so I just went full gas." Brent Bookwalter was also in the top 25 (23rd, 2:34 behind) while Morabito finished 55th, 3:57 behind, and is 20th overall (7:10 behind). Joaquin Rodriquez (Katusha Team) kept the overall lead by one second ahead of Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank), who finished second on the stage.
