Volta ao Algarve A Test Of Fitness

12. February 2012

Santa Rosa, California

The BMC Racing Team's roster for the Volta ao Algarve includes both a stage winner and podium finisher from last year's edition. But BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said pre-race expectations are based on improving fitness, not garnering results.

'A Relaxed Approach'

"It's the first real stage race for many guys and the main goal isn't to go full gas right away," Verbrugghe said. "Our goal is to have good condition afterwards and to be ready for Paris-Nice in two weeks." Last year, Stephen Cummings won the third stage and held onto the lead until the final stage while Tejay van Garderen finished second overall to his then-teammate, Tony Martin. "Algarve is a good test of form going into some of my big goals of the year," van Garderen said. "I'm taking a relaxed approach, but I would like to assert myself on the (Stage 3) summit finish and in the (final stage) time trial. It will be a good chance to fine tune the form, and if all goes well, pick up a result." Verbrugghe said Greg Van Avermaet's condition is also good. "There could be some stages that are good for him, too," he said.
