Volta a Catalunya, Stage 1: In The Pack

19. March 2012

The BMC Racing Team finished all seven of its riders in the peloton Monday as the stage winner emerged from a breakaway on the opening day of the Volta a Cataluya.

No Threat Overall
Michael Albasini (GreenEDGE Cycling Team) soloed to the win after being part of a five-man group that escaped about 50 kilometers into the 138.9 km race and gained a six minute lead. He finished 1:32 ahead of the pack, a gap that should not pose a threat to the overall contenders, BMC Racing Team's Johann Tschopp said. "There are some big mountain stages still to come, especially on the third day, when the time gaps will be minutes," he said. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said Stage 2 will a bit less hectic. "With no prologue, there was no clear definition of the leader, which made it more difficult for teams to take the responsibility of the chase," he said. "Tomorrow the race will be controlled and that will be better."
