Tour of Beijing, Stage 4: Frank 10th

14. October 2013

BMC Racing Team's Mathias Frank finished 10th and teammates Dominik Nerz and Marco Pinotti were 16th and 18th respectively, on the mountain-top finish Monday at the Tour of Beijing.

Show Of Aggression From Pinotti
Pinotti, competing in the last stage race of a 15-year professional career, went on the attack on the lower slopes of the finishing climb. "All week, I have been feeling well," the Italian national time trial champion said. "This is a course that's very good for me and I can show what I can do when the climbs aren't so hard. So I went on the attack, hoping the riders behind were looking at each other because there were not so many riders with teammates left." After Pinotti was brought back, Frank, Nerz and Pinotti remained in the select group of leaders until the final minutes of the 150.5-kilometer race. Benat Intxausti (Movistar Team) soloed away to take the win ahead of Dan Martin (Garmin-Sharp) and David Lopez (Sky Procycling) was third. Frank arrived 18 seconds after Intxausti and is 13th overall, 31 seconds back. "It was hard, with a lot of wind," Frank said. "It wasn't so steep, but there was a bit of headwind until the last couple of kilometers. There were a lot of attacks, so I just tried to follow because I knew I didn't have the best legs." Assistant Director Max Sciandri said he was hoping the BMC Racing Team could hang onto its lead in the team classification. Movistar played the spoiler, though, taking a five-second lead with a day of the race to go. "This is a team that goes to win races and not really win the team GC (general classification)," Sciandri said. "But we were there. The guys did a good job."
