Tour de Suisse, Stage 9: Frank Finishes 12th, Wins Best Swiss

17. June 2012

Mathias Frank's sixth place finish on Sunday's final stage at the Tour de Suisse moved the BMC Racing Team rider up to 12th place overall and won him the "Best Swiss" classification.

Bookwalter In The Break
Frank said though he felt short of his goal to finish in the top 10, he did his best in the 215.8 kilometer race that featured two major climbs. "I tried everything today," he said. "When they attacked on the Glaubenberg, I knew I would just go my own rhythm and for sure it would come back. Then I tried to attack at the end but it was so hard. I couldn't really get away." Earlier, teammate Brent Bookwalter was part of a five-man breakaway that led by 13 minutes with 93 km to go."It was a hard day on a hard course, no matter whether you were in the breakaway or the peloton," Bookwalter said. "After losing contact with the three remaining riders in his group a few kilometers from the top of the Glaubenbielen, Bookwalter said he hoped to catch them on the descent. "It turned out to be a lot of headwind and a lot of pedaling so it wasn't even a lot of downhill," he said. "I nuked myself a little bit and then that was it." Tanel Kangert (Astana Pro Team), who was part of Bookwalter's breakaway, won the stage in a sprint against Jérémy Roy (FDJ-BIgMat) while Rui Costa (Moviestar Team) took the overall victory. Fifty-one of the 143 riders who started the final stage did not finish.
