Tour de San Luis, Stage 6: Van Garderen Hangs Onto Second

26. January 2013

BMC Racing Team's Tejay van Garderen held onto second place overall at the Tour de San Luis Saturday by finishing sixth, 18 seconds behind stage winner Alberto Contador (Team Saxo-Tinkoff).

Aggressive Strategy
When Contador attacked just before a hairpin turn about 1.5 kilometers from the end of the 156.6 km queen stage, only race leader Ricardo Díaz (San Luis Somos Todos) could eventually close the gap but not pass last year's Vuelta a España winner. Van Garderen crossed the line 18 seconds later to maintain his runner-up spot overall by six seconds over Alex Diniz (Funvic-Pindamonhangaba), who finished third on the stage. "The team was really superb, putting Tejay in good position to maintain his second place," BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said. "We attacked in the beginning because we knew people were waiting for the last climb – and that it would be difficult to take time on the leader because he was already there in the final last year on the same stage." With one day of the race to go, the BMC Racing Team leads the team classification. Sunday's final stage is a 154.7 km circuit race and one more for the sprinters, Lelangue said.
