Tour de San Luis, Stage 3: Van Garderen Fifth

23. January 2013

BMC Racing Team's Tejay van Garderen finished fifth on Wednesday's uphill finish at the Tour de San Luis, arriving 25 seconds behind solo stage winner Alex Diniz (Funvic-Pindamonhangaba).

Following The Leaders
Van Garderen was part of a small group chasing Diniz up the 4.8-kilometer climb at the end of the 173.1 km stage. Van Garderen said he was unaware that Diniz had slipped up the road. "My whole idea was to just stay with the leaders so that I can hopefully beat them in the time trial," he said. "I tried to attack with a kilometer to go, but mainly I was just happy to be up there with the best guys. I'm feeling good." Last year's best young rider at the Tour de France stands sixth overall, 25 seconds behind new race leader Diniz heading into Thursday's 19.2 kilometer time trial. BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said he was pleased with the work the squad did to keep a breakaway group of seven in check. After their lead peaked at four minutes, they were caught with 35 km to go. "We had to ride a little bit but the guys did a good job to control things and get Tejay in position for the last climb," he said.
