22. July 2010

Col du Tourmalet, France

Marcus Burghardt of the BMC Racing Team was part of Thursday's seven-man breakaway that enjoyed freedom until the lower slopes of the Col du Tourmalet, the  final climb of this year's Tour de France.

Evans Rode Own Pace
Burghardt and his group led by as much as 8:40. But the German – winner of Stage 17 of the 2008 Tour – dropped back after Alexandr Kolobnev attacked with 14 kilometers to go. Steve Morabito (16th place) was the BMC Racing Team's best finisher on the stage won by Andy Schleck (Team Saxo Bank). World champion Cadel Evans was 59th, 12:00 back. "I just rode my own tempo today," Evans said. "My ambition got me in trouble earlier in the Tour. It did great for me in Morzine, but from then on it's gotten me in trouble. I'm still here and certainly would hate to be at home having given up."
