Santos Tour Down Under, Stage 5: Second Top 10 For Ballan

22. January 2011

Willunga, Australia

Alessandro Ballan of the BMC Racing Team finished eighth in Saturday's Queen Stage of the Santos Tour Down Under to remain in 11th place overall with one day of racing remaining.

A Hard Stage

Ballan, who has twice finished in the top 10 in five stages, said he hopes to climb into the top 10 with a strong finish Sunday. "Today was very, very hard," the former world champion said. "I made the first group and hoped to do a good sprint but my legs are still not the best." Early in the 131-kilometer race, John Murphy represented the BMC Racing Team in an eight-rider breakaway that gained a lead of 2:36 before being reeled in on the first of two ascents of Old Willunga Hill. Francisco Ventoso (Movistar) won the sprint finish while Cameron Meyer (Garmin-Cervelo) kept the overall lead.
