Giro d’Italia, Stage 18: Danilo Wyss sprinted to 12th Place

24. May 2012

BMC Racing Team’s Danilo Wyss scored a 12th place in Thursday’s 139-kilometers stage of Giro which has been a quiet day overall for the BMC Racing Team with the sprinter’s teams controlling the peloton.

Racing Near Ballan’s Place

After the intermediate sprint of Cesomaggiore, with 55km to go, Marco Pinotti tried to form a breakaway with five other riders, BMC Racing Team’s assistant sport director Fabio Baldato, said it was the decisive moment, “With the roads turning to be narrow on the section following, it was the right moment to create a gap and I think that Team Sky understood it was a dangerous move, that’s why they reacted immediately.” Eventually, Andrea Guardini (Farnese Vini - Selle Italia) won the sprint ahead of the world road champion Mark Cavendish (Sky Procycling) and Danilo Wyss sprinted to 12th place and scored the best result of the BMC Racing Team. Alessandro Ballan finished 21stand explained that racing in his home place was a factor of motivation “Today it was really hard to go in the break, and it would have been my only chance to play for victory in that stage, so I managed to stay near the top 20 for the finish.” Riding his first Giro d’Italia, the past 2008 world road champion said even if it’s hard to ride in a Grand Tour after the Nothern Classics season he made, he enjoys competing that race “It’s a beautiful event and I’m glad to discover it and to feel the attraction of the people that are glad to see me on the roads of Giro d’Italia.”
