Giro d'Italia, Stage 15: Another Hard Day

22. May 2011

Val di Fassa, Italy

Johann Tschopp used his climbing prowess again to make the breakaway at the Giro d'Italia. But the BMC Racing Team rider was unable to stay with the leaders over all five climbs of a more than seven-hour, 229-kilometer race.

'They're All Heroes'
"The plan was to get in the break," BMC Racing Team Assistant Sports Director Max Sciandri said. "On the third climb of the day, he (Tschopp) went into the red. From there on, it was a bit of a fight to the finish. Tschopp finished 25th as Mikel Nieve (Euskaltel-Euskadias) – who was part of Tschopp's 18-man breakaway – soloed to win the stage. Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard) kept the lead. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said "It was a really, really hard day and our guys never stopped. They are all heroes today by finishing the stage."
