Giro d'Italia, Stage 14: Tschopp Moves Up

19. May 2012

By finishing only 1:16 behind the winner of Saturday's rain-soaked, mountainous stage of the Giro d'Italia, Johann Tschopp moved himself further up the overall standings for the BMC Racing Team.

Long Climb At The End
With seven stages remaining, Tschopp is 17th overall, 2:41 off the lead of new maglia rosa wearer Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda). The long climb to the finish at the end of the 206 kilometer stage was made even more challenging by rain that fell earlier in the day. "
My day was not too bad," Tschopp said. "I rode close to the pink jersey, which means my condition is pretty good. But that was only the first mountain stage so we'll see how things go this week. For me, cold weather is not a problem. I feel better in it than in the heat, that's why I prefer the Giro more than the Vuelta." After Tschopp, Marco Pinotti crossed the line in 39th place, 3:05 back from the stage winer. Ivan Santaromita, who had been fifth overall, finished 4:26 in arrears in 48th place. "We tried to get someone in the break today because we thought it would go all the way to the finish and it did," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said.
