Phinney Fourth Overall At Eneco Tour

14. August 2011

Geleen, The Netherlands

Taylor Phinney's bid for a second stage win for the BMC Racing Team at the Eneco Tour of Benelux ended in the final corner Sunday when the rider in front of him slid out, sending Phinney into the barriers.

A Good Week

Phinney was not hurt and received the same time as stage winner Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky Pro Cycling), who also won the race overall. Phinney wound up fourth overall, 36 seconds behind, in a race that saw him win the prologue, hold the lead through Stage 3 and finish in the top 10 five times. "It's unfortunate the last corner was really dangerous because Taylor was in a good position to do something really good today," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said.

Help From Teammates
Knowing he needed only eight seconds to move into third overall, Phinney tried an attack with eight kilometers left in the 201.2 km race. "I was feeling really strong in the last 20 km so when the Katusha rider went down in front of me at the end, it was really frustrating," Phinney said. "I was extremely happy to have Karsten Kroon and Micki Schär and everyone else on the team helping me today. It was a difficult day and nobody knows these roads like Karsten, so I felt lucky to have him around me."
