Vuelta a España, Stage 7: Time Lost In Crash

24. agosto 2012

Steve Morabito, the BMC Racing Team's best-placed rider at the Vuelta a España, lost time due to a crash in the final 10 kilometers of Friday's race and slid from 14th to 17th overall.

'Road Was Totally Blocked'
With speeds extraordinarily fast on the smooth tarmac of the Motorland Aragón race track, Morabito said he would have lost even more than the 33 seconds he conceded had his teammates not pitched in to help him chase back. "The road was totally blocked in the crash and had to jump off my bike to get around it," Morabito said. "My teammates waited but the circuit was so fast that gaps were opening up." Klaas Lodewyck, who was hoping to contest the sprint, sacrificed his own chances after escaping the crash. "I actually waited only the last three kilometers because they told me with four km to wait and I was in the top 15 at the time," he said. "I I could only help him the least 400 meters, but it maybe saved him 5 seconds." John Degenkolb (Argos-Shimano) took his third stage win of the race while Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha Team) kept the overall lead.
