Training Camp Diary: Working Well Together

Santa Cruz

A week into training camp, BMC Racing Team President Jim Ochowicz had the chance to assess the team’s progress by accompanying the team on Sunday’s training ride. And the former team director said he liked what he saw.

Practicing Race Conditions
Throughout the 109-mile (175 km) ride, BMC Racing Team Assistant Directeur Sportif Mike Sayers put the 18 riders through a variety of exercises to simulate race conditions. “Mike had them organized and flying down the road in a perfect echelon,” Ochowicz said after the five-hour ride. “It was a good day of race preparation training that included pacelines and motor pacing at race speed.” Training on dry roads was nice, Ochowicz added, and he is pleased with the attitude of the riders after an opening week that included plenty of rain. “Seeing them together and watching the chemistry develop on and off the bikes is equally exciting.”

Australian Arrivals
Fresh off an outstanding performance at the Santos Tour Down Under that saw the BMC Racing Team earn several podium placings and put two riders in the top 15 overall (Cadel Evans, sixth; George Hincapie, 12th), several riders and staff from that race arrive in California today. Evans and Hincapie will join their teammates at the team’s camp headquarters in Agoura Hills for the remainder of camp. It promises to be a busy week, with photos, media day and several challenging days of training.
