Tour of Belgium: Van Avermaet Shines

28. maggio 2011

Eupen, Belgium

BMC Racing Team's Greg Van Avermaet finished runner-up to race leader Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) on Saturday's penultimate stage of the Tour of Belgium to climb into second overall.

Great Teamwork
"I hoped I could beat him (Gilbert) on a finish like that," Van Avermaet said after contesting the four-up sprint at the end of the 202-kilometer race. "Marcus (Burghardt) and the team did great work in the first part of the race to keep me out of the wind." Sunday's stage likely will not offer Van Avermaet a chance to make up the 15 seconds he is behind Gilbert. "It's a flat stage, so I think it's going to be a bunch sprint," he said. Michael Schär was in the breakaway all day and is now leading the "Rushes" classification. He will be wearing the red jersey on Sunday's final stage.

Giro d'Italia, Stage 20: Last Hard Day
Sestriere, Italy – On the final day of climbing at the Giro d'Italia, Johann Tschopp finished 15th for the BMC Racing Team while continuing his ascent up the overall standings into 16th. "I came to him on the last long climb and told him to try harder," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said. "He responded well and had good motivation. He was better on the second part of the climb than the others." Vasili Kiryienka (Movistar) soloed to the stage win and Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard) kept the lead.
