Tour de Suisse, Stage 5: Burghardt Solos To Victory

16. giugno 2010

Frutigen, Switzerland

Marcus Burghardt's well-timed attack just outside one kilometer helped him solo to victory and deliver the BMC Racing Team a win on its title sponsor's home soil Wednesday at the Tour de Suisse.

Well-Timed Attack

On a rain-soaked day, Burghardt was part of a five-man group that built a lead of five minutes before it dwindled to just three: Burghardt, Daniel Oss (Liquigas) and Martijn Maaskant (Garmin-Transitions). "My plan was to look for Maaskant because he was the strongest, but then he went out on the left side and was blocked by Oss," Burghardt said. "When I saw that, I took the moment and attacked. This is a nice present for (BMC Racing Team Owner) Andy Rihs and the BMC Racing Team to have a victory in Switzerland."

Third Win Of 2010
The win was the BMC Racing Team's third of the season and Burghardt's first since Stage 18 of the 2008 Tour de France. BMC Racing Team Director Sportif John Lelangue said the plan for the 172 km race was to place someone other than Steve Morabito (sixth place overall) in the breakaway. "Marcus even told me, 'I'll be in the break, no problem,' " Lelangue said. "I was pretty confident once they made it to 30 km to go that they would make it."
