Tour de Pologne, Stage 1: Mathias Frank 13th

10. luglio 2012

Mathias Frank's 13th place finish led the BMC Racing Team in the opening stage of the Tour de Pologne Tuesday.

Pursuit Of The Breakaway
Frank said he was unable to contest the sprint at the end of the 179.5 kilometer race that comprised four laps of a circuit that included a 13 km climb. "It was really fast the last lap on the climb," he said. " I think everyone was tired and with the rain it was really quite dangerous. I was feeling quite good today, especially on the climbs but I was a bit too far back to get a good sprint." The BMC Racing Team did a fair amount of chasing to bring back a five-rider breakaway that enjoyed a nine-minute lead early on. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said the hope was to set up Greg Van Avermaet for the uphill sprint. "We felt that we had a good chance to see him up there in a smaller group of 40 or 50," Sciandri said. "The group of 40 or 50 was there, but without Greg. Unfortunately, he and Alessandro Ballan lost contact in the last kilometer." Moreno Moser (Liquigas-Cannondale) took the win while Frank finished in the same time. Van Avermaet (43rd) and Ballan (48th) finished 1:13 behind.
