Special BMC For A Special Cause

20. agosto 2010

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

For the next year, BMC Racing Team President Jim Ochowicz will be pedaling a limited edition BMC for a special campaign to save lives of blood cancer patients. Deemed "The Legend," the bike is based on BMC's ProMachine platform, which is the best selling frame in the history of BMC.

The limited edition bicycle – donated by BMC's division in the United States – will be autographed by Ochowicz and riders on the BMC Racing Team before being auctioned off next year. During the campaign supporters will be encouraged to register as potential bone marrow donors with DKMS.Profits from its sale will go to "David's Donors," an organization created by Ochowicz's sister, Mary, in honor of her son David to raise awareness for the need of blood and bone marrow donors.

BMC-USA's Troy Angwin brainstormed the idea and coordinated the assistance of a number of people and several BMC Racing Team sponsors, including Easton (wheels, bars, stem, tape), Campagnolo (Super Record 11 components), Selle Italia (saddle), SpeedPlay (pedals) and Elite (bottles, cages). The BMC Racing Team bicycles are also equipped with Continental tires, SwissStop brake pads and K-Edge chain catchers. They are serviced using Park Tools and Motorex lubricants.

"Mary and her son have battled cancer," Angwin said, "and this week marked the end of my own mother's battle with cancer, which took her life two years ago this week. I'm extremely grateful for all the people who came together to make this project a reality."

The "David" of David's Donors (www.davidsdonors.com) is Mary Ochowicz-Sczesny's teenage son, who was diagnosed in 2008 with MDS (Mylodysplastic Syndrome), a bone marrow cancer. He needed a bone marrow transplant to survive and Mary hosted several donor drives with DKMS to help her son and others. David since then has received a transplant and was able to meet his miracle donor.

DKMS, the world's largest bone marrow donor center and the national organization for bone marrow awareness (www.dkmsamericas.org).

BMC's retailer Wheel and Sprocket, Wisconsin's largest bicycle store, helped build up the special bicycle and was the site of presentation of the bike to Ochowicz and members of his family. BMC's "The Legend" frameset (non-autographed) is also available through retailers within the United States, but only in limited quantities. Visit www.bmc-racing.com for a list of retailers.

The DKMS mission is to save lives by recruiting bone marrow donors for leukemia patients. More than 20,000 DKMS donors have helped save lives by donating their bone marrow. DKMS is the largest bone marrow donor center in the world with over 2 million registered donors. DKMS Americas is a 501 (c)(3) non profit organization.
