Giro d'Italia, Stage 13: Protecting Evans

17. maggio 2013

The BMC Racing Team put all of its efforts Friday into protecting Cadel Evans's second place on the general classification as the longest stage of this year's Giro d'Italia ended in a bunch sprint.

'A Great Job For Cadel'
That meant many of the 254 kilometers were spent riding in the wind, BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said. "It was not hard, but there was a strong wind all day," he said. "The race was nervous for the GC riders. I'm satisfied because the riders did a great job for Cadel. We saw Taylor Phinney, Daniel Oss, Danilo Wyss and Steve Cummings all day in the wind to keep Cadel in the front. For the final climb, it was Ivan Santaromita and Steve Morabito who stayed with him. For sure, they spent a lot of energy just to keep Cadel safe to the finish." With a pair of mountain-top finishes ahead this weekend, Evans is 41 seconds off the lead of Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team). Rigoberto Uran (Sky Procycling) is third, 2:04 behind. Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) earned his fourth stage win of the race by winning the field sprint ahead of Giacomo Nizzolo (RadioShack Leopard).
