Circuit Franco-Belge, Stage 1: Schär Initiates Key Breakaway

27. settembre 2012

Michael Schär's attack on the final lap of Thursday's circuit finish on the opening stage of Circuit Franco-Belge led to a decisive split in the peloton and an eventual seventh-place result for the BMC Racing Team rider.

Motivational Pre-Race Meeting
On a rainy, windy day, the BMC Racing Team took an aggressive approach, working in tandem with the Lotto-Belisol Team to slice the peloton into pieces 70 kilometers into the 165.8 km race. Six of the BMC Racing Team's seven riders made the front group. "We have (Assistant Director) Rik Verbrugghe to thank for a good pre-race meeting and for motivating us to stay all together," Schär said. "We had really good teamwork today." As the final, 11 km lap was about to begin and two large groups were coming together, Schär made his move. Only seven others could follow. "There were some strong guys in our group – like Juan Antonio Flecha, Sep Vanmarcke and Jurgen Roelandts, so we had some good speed," Schär said. "Unfortunately, I took the wrong wheel (of Flecha) for the sprint." Lotto-Belisol's Roelandts took the win while the peloton rolled in 39 seconds later. Verbrugghe said almost certainly the time gap will be pivotal to the overall classification of the four-day race. "We'll see how the race goes, but that's a lot of seconds," he said.
