Circuit de la Sarthe, Stage 4: Oss Most Aggressive

10. aprile 2014

Daniel Oss of the BMC Racing Team earned "most aggressive rider" honors for his time in the breakaway Thursday at Circuit de la Sarthe while teammate Steve Cummings finished seventh on the day and moved into the top 10 with one day to go.

The Course:
The 196.2-kilometer course from Angers  to Pré-en-Pail finished with five laps of a circuit that included a climb that also served as the finish.

Oss In The Breakaway:
Oss went on the attack with Marco Minnaard (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Michael Schwarzmann (Team NetApp-Endura) and the trio built a four-minute lead before Oss – the last of the escapees – was caught on the second lap of the circuit.

The Finish:
Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin-Sharp) won the stage after shaking free from a select group near the finish. Julien Simon (COFIDIS, Solutions Crédits) edged out Anthony Roux (FDJ.fr) for second, four seconds later. Cummings and teammate Ben Hermans (11th) arrived nine seconds after Navardauskas.

In The Overall Standings:
Navardauskas moved into the overall lead as previous race leader Alex Dowsett (Movistar Team) lost 16 minutes. Cummings climbed into eighth, 30 seconds back while Hermans is 12th at 40 seconds. Peter Stetina (18th) is the BMC Racing Team's third rider in the top 20, 1:20 back.

What Oss Said:
"Today, I decided I would try to test my legs in a breakaway because at the Giro d'Italia, situations like this one are possible. Also, it was a hard stage and I wanted to keep improving. Winning the most aggressive award is a good premium and helps my morale. I am finally feeling good and can do my job. So I am looking forward to a great Giro."

What Sport Director Jackson Stewart Said:
"We had hoped the breakaway would have been a little bigger to put the pressure on the other teams. Oss is just coming back (from injury) so it was a good effort for him. Things really blew apart near the end, but it was nice to see four of our guys - Brent Bookwalter, Cummings, Hermans and Stetina - in a select group of 26 with a lap to go."
